Director, Legal Ops & Legal Systems Innovation

Join Earthjustice as the Director, Legal Ops & Legal Systems Innovation to lead the design and operation of effective legal technology and administrative systems supporting Earthjustices legal programs.

The Director will partner with IT and legal leadership to develop and implement a technology strategy that improves productivity, compliance, and risk management. Responsibilities include managing a skilled team, overseeing financial and operational processes, driving process improvements, ensuring compliance with ethical walls and conflicts protocols, and optimizing matter and contract management systems.

What Youll Do

  • Collaborate with organizational leadership to align operational strategies, improve legal systems innovation, and enhance workflow efficiency.
  • Oversee the teams budgeting, administrative, and people management functions and develop internal guidelines, templates, and workflows that meet policy standards.
  • Uphold Earthjustices mission and values by fostering a respectful, inclusive, and collaborative work environment, providing clear direction and prompt feedback, and promoting learning for all team members.
  • Develop and execute the departments strategic operational plan, analyze data for decisionmaking, and identify costsaving opportunities.
  • Establish and track KPIs and operational metrics for the team, and manage budget and resource allocation for legal technology tools.
  • Oversee conflictofinterest processes, implement ethical wall protocols, and coordinate with IT on system maintenance and backend support.
  • Manage legal risk mitigation processes, including conflicts checks and resolution, and improve related processes and systems.
  • Gather, maintain, and interpret matter intelligence for reporting to senior leadership and support matter intake, assignment, and timetracking optimization.
  • Oversee daytoday operations of contract management systems and evaluate potential platforms, and partner with IT and program teams to adopt AIbased tools.
  • Support process development to maintain compliance during tool deployment and periodically evaluate effectiveness.
  • Stay current on emerging legal technologies and trends, actively pursue professional development, and promote a culture of learning.

What Youll Bring

  • Minimum of 5 years of progressive legal operations experience with at least 2 years in a management role.
  • Strong leadership, communication, and management skills.
  • Techsavvy with deep knowledge of matter management and intelligence systems (e.g., Intapp, Foundation), ethical walls, conflicts, and time entry; experience deploying AIbased legal tools and aligning solutions with compliance frameworks.
  • Demonstrated changemanagement expertise for technology, process, and people transitions.
  • Understanding of legal operations and litigation processes within law firms.
  • Superb project management, attention to detail, and ability to meet tight deadlines amid changing priorities.
  • Deep understanding of legal ethics, conflicts management, and professional responsibility.
  • Experience in developing, implementing, and tracking budgets.
  • Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills, sound judgment, and discretion with confidential information.
  • Commitment to building and retaining a diverse and inclusive workforce.
